Alicja's Story

One word sums up why I wanted to buy - security. I knew I'd be staying in the area, and rent felt like money down the drain. It's why I went for a fixed rate mortgage. Property is seen as a pension nowadays, plus, after years of not buying furniture, I'm settled in my own home and can arrange it how I like.

When I was buying it I got into a bidding war. An estate agent friend suggested I meet the seller and negotiate directly with her. That personal element meant that she accepted my offer, we agreed there and then and I got the property.

I love my home. It's mine. I can buy sofas, vases and I can do DIY and decorate it. It's the security of where I live plus the security of an investment.

Alicja's thoughts

Bidding wars and gazumping are awful, and even without that, so many people can have you over a barrel during house buying. My solicitors added £150 to my bill simply because I wanted them to process it quickly. I couldn't argue. You need them more than they need you.

I also know now that you have to compromise. You'll never find your perfect place, no matter how much money you've got. Prioritise what you want from your home and be realistic.

Finally, get advice from friends and people you trust, especially if they've just been through the home-buying process. If you know any estate agents or solicitors, talk to them. There's so much paperwork and it's so complicated that you have to put your trust in others. The more you know, the better position you'll be in.
